School Board Meeting

For Carson's Citizenship in the Community merit badge, he needed to attend a school board or town hall meeting.  We figured that the school board topics would be of a greater interest to Carson, we headed off in our scout uniforms.  We were warmly greeted by the school superintendent and were offered sodas by the secretary.  One of the guest speakers, a architect from Lubbock, came over and introduced himself to Carson.  We were the only non-board members in attendance and were recognized by the superintendent when the meeting started.  Carson held his own during the budget review (he was amazed to see $100 million dollars in the bank) and was very interested when they were discussing the renovations to the high school.  His eyes got very big when it was pointed out that of the $5 billion tax base, $4.5 billion of that is from mineral rights.  The only budget item that got any discussion was whether or not to purchase a $35,000 dishwasher for the elementary school.

It was one of those fun Scouting moments when Carson leaned over in the middle of the meeting and said, "Dad, this is really interesting."  Scouting - fun with a purpose!
